As a new semester begins, students all over Pittsburgh are beginning to think about their future plans. For many students, these plans involve finding housing for the summer and the upcoming year. With all of the neighborhoods available to choose from, it can get pretty confusing. From what looking I’ve personally done over the past couple of years, I can say that Bloomfield certainly tops the list of many University of Pittsburgh students.

Cabaret Series Livens the Avenue

Good news Bloomfield, there’s a new performance series in the area. The Pittsburgh Dance & Theatre Arts studio that recently moved into the space under W.G. Grinders and Starbucks has started a monthly cabaret. Saturday, November 7 was the first performance of the cabaret, with its theme of “The Psycho Go Go!” The cabaret featured performances like B movie comedy and horror by Stage Fright, the blues styling of Gypsy Piano Blues, a belly dancing performance by Sadira, hip-hop artist Lucid Music and the Psycho Go Go Dancers. The whole performance was hosted by Dr. Mirakle and Scumbelina.

Quantum Theatre Presents Candide

Quantum Theatre, a company that doesn’t believe in the use of traditional performing spaces, is coming to Bloomfield with its latest production, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. For this production, Quantum Theatre decided to make use of the old Don Allen Auto City Chevrolet building for its unique ability to connect with the audience, and also to add its own level of interpretation. Candide is a play about the best of all possible worlds, and by having it in this abandoned car company, Quantum Theatre adds a new layer of irony. With the failing car industry and the economy, an empty garage is the perfect location for a play that looks at the disillusionment of an optimist.

Scavenger Hunt in Bloomfield

Pittsburgh’s Little Italy Hits the New York Post

Walk at the Waterfront

The Cancer Caring Center located here in Bloomfield is looking for your support, and all you have to do to help is walk. On Sunday, September 13, 2009 the center is holding Walk at the Waterfront, a fundraising pledge walk that begins at 11. The walk is only half an hour and goes along the walking path around the Waterfront.

Bloomfield is a walkers’ paradise. With its wide sidewalks, numerous restaurants and shops along Liberty Avenue, it’s not hard to see why. We recently wrote about a Pittsburgh Tribune Review article that mentioned Bloomfield’s walkability, and this week’s Pop City article “Walk this Way: Pittsburgh’s Walkable Neighborhoods” gives similar praise, even including several photos of our pedestrian-friendly neighborhood.
