Columbus Day Parade 2011

Posted by John Carman on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 4:07 PM

Pittsburgh’s Columbus Day Parade Committee will celebrate its 26th Annual Columbus Day Parade on Saturday, October 8, 2011. The parade, starting at 11 a.m., will follow Liberty Avenue from Baum Boulevard to the Bloomfield Bridge.

This year’s grand marshal is Pietro DiPietro, owner of DiPietro’s Ristorante in West View. Mr. DiPietro came to this country from Italy 42 years ago, and has been a long-time supporter of the parade and Pittsburgh’s Italian-American community.

The parade will be dedicated to Pittsburgh radio personality John Cigna, who died on May 20 at 75. “John was a passionate supporter of the parade and regularly participated in it by leading a group of motorcyclists known as Cigna’s Riders” said Guy Costa, the parade chairman. “One of John’s sons will be leading the Riders this year and members of the Cigna family and the Little Sisters of the Poor, which he supported for many years, will be marching.”

Mr. Costa says that this year’s parade will celebrate Pittsburgh’s multicultural heritage with traditional Italian music as well as ethnic music from countries including Poland, Ireland, Scotland, India and the Caribbean. There will be representatives from the parade’s major sponsor, the Italian Sons & Daughters of America, as well as Italian-American fraternal organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Spigno-Saturina Society, Sons of Italy, Villetta Barrea Club, Lucchesi nel Mondo and Societa’ Dante Alighieri.

The parade is expected to last about two hours, and streets along the parade route will be closed at about 9:30 a.m.
