Reminder: Bloomfield Community Meeting

Posted by John Carman on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 6:00 PM

The Bloomfield Development Corporation is facilitating a completion of a five-year vision and community plan for Bloomfield. The plan will be a community supported, strategic plan that will include the business and residential area of Bloomfield. The community, businesses, stakeholders, elected officials and community groups are all invited to participate in the process that will articulate a vision for the future. The process will be based on community input garnered through public meetings, focus groups, and other outreach strategies that will engage people around the questions:

  • How do you see Bloomfield emerging over the next five years?
  • What do you like most about Bloomfield?
  • What do we need to do in the next five years to ensure that the community remains healthy and vital?

The Big Idea Member Drive

Posted by John Carman on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 8:00 PM

The Big Idea Bookstore is moving to 4812 Liberty Avenue at the end of the month. Before they officially open at the new location, they are throwing a party especially for supporters who are interested in buying a Big Idea membership.

The Big Idea Member DriveTo help promote the event, download a printable JPEG flyer.

This black-tie membership event will be at the new storefront on Saturday, July 30, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The party costs $10 at the door, and your door money can be counted toward the purchase of a membership.

As a business, they want to remain grassroots-funded—they want to avoid lending institutions and make the expansion bank-free. So in order to make the move a success, they need your help.

Can’t make it but still want to support The Big Idea? Consider donating. They need your support now more than ever. They are still $4,000 away from buying all the coffee equipment they need. They are $10,000 away from buying all the fixtures, equipment, food, coffee, and new inventory that they need in order to re-open as a bookstore and café. Whether your donation is $5 or $5,000, your contribution will help create a much needed radical space for books, coffee, and events here in Pittsburgh.

Come show your support for the Big Idea, while showing off your best black-tie apparel!

Volunteers are Awesome!!!

On Wednesday, July 6, 19 young people who were attending the Mennonite Convention came to Bloomfield to do community service work. None of them live in Pittsburgh, but they spent three hours in the hot sun painting the trash barrels that were donated last year by Iron City Brewery. It was their way of saying “thank you” to the City of Pittsburgh for hosting the convention, and a chance to partner with local people to learn about what’s going on in Pittsburgh.

The Bloomfield Development Corporation coordinates these type of collaborative projects that engage volunteers in programs and activities that benefit and enhance our neighborhood.

Mennonite Convention Volunteers

Look for the barrels on Liberty Avenue during the Bloomfield Development Corporation’s outreach activities and Little Italy Days. Thanks to Jason Sauer from Most Wanted Fine Art for supervising the painting, and Fr. John Dinello, Pastor of Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish, for his cooperation with the facilities.

A big thanks to all of these special young people—it’s the volunteers that make a difference!
