A BIG Thanks to BDC Volunteers for Showing Up Like Postal Workers!

Posted by Terry Ford Aiello on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 9:00 AM

We postponed our first 2011 Redd Up from Saturday to Sunday last weekend because of the weather, and it turned out to be no better, if not worse!

In spite of “rain, sleet and gloom of day,” we still had volunteers that showed up and made a noticeable dent in the litter on Liberty Avenue! A special thanks to Emma, Mike, Gracie, Brain and David!

Our next Redd Up is planned for Sunday, June 12 — mark your calendars and pray for sunshine!

Litter is litter!

Posted by Terry Ford Aiello on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 9:00 AM

This article was reposted from Newslitter with permission from Boris Weinstein. Newslitter is distributed monthly by Citizens Against Litter in Shadyside.

The Post-Gazette changed the color of those intrusive plastic sleeves from blue to gold (or yellow). Inside are copies of the free Sunday Extra. Alas, litter is still litter…not a horse of a different color. Like clockwork, every Sunday, litter — in the form of a circulation promotion sample — is tossed onto Shadyside streets, sidewalks, gutters and grassy places. Targeted residents seem to be picking up more of them and tossing them into their garbage cans. One victimized house for sale at 5513 Howe Street — spotted by Mr. Litterman — had three sleeves on the front lawn — two blues and one yellow by mid month.

[Bloomfield] residents have a choice: Keep picking up papers that turn into litter or call/e-mail the Post-Gazette at 412-263-1897 or toboyle@post-gazette.com and say, “Please stop.”

Did you know the City will plant a tree at your home or business?

Posted by Terry Ford Aiello on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 9:00 AM

You can request that the City of Pittsburgh plant a tree on your property. There is no charge for this service, although you must be the property owner and agree to perform general upkeep of the tree planting bed by weeding, annually mulching and providing water.

There is no guarantee that a tree will be place on your property; the TreeVitalize coordinator will do a site analysis to determine the suitability of planting a tree at this location.

Hurry! The deadline is April 15. To apply, download the Tree Planting Request Form.

Attention all BDC Volunteers!

Bloomfield Gears Up for Neighborhood Plan

Posted by Jennifer Lucchino on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 9:00 AM

On Monday, March 7, 2011, over 100 people gathered at the Bloomfield Liedertafel to attend a community meeting for the Bloomfield Neighborhood Plan. The standing-room-only crowd included residents, business owners, homeowners, workers, representatives of community organization and local city government. The purpose of the meeting was to solicit input from Bloomfield stakeholders that would identify concerns, strengths and aspirations of the community.

This meeting represented the first major step in a six-month process initiated by the Bloomfield Development Corporation (BDC). Faced with the challenge of obtaining funding for projects in the community, the BDC, a non-profit community development corporation, reached out to funding partners from the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (CDCP), Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND) and Fifth Third Bank to define a process that would better enable Bloomfield to compete for available funds. Executive Director Karla Owens explained that this process will lead to completing a five year vision for Bloomfield.

The presentation was prepared and led by Freddie Croce and myself, architects and planners with inter*ARCHITECTURE. Attendees had the opportunity to contribute their concerns and aspirations for the community by speaking to the group and completing a survey. Eleven enthusiastic audience members took the opportunity to address the group, ranging from a ten-year renter in the area, to a seven-year business owner and a lifelong resident. Collectively, they voiced a desire to clean up certain areas in the neighborhood and lauded the community’s strengths such as its diversity, strong history and central location amongst other issues.

Next steps include a series of three focus group meetings over the next two months on major topics that concern the community. These will be held in different locations in Bloomfield to reach out to as many people as possible. This will lead to the development of specific implementation ideas that will be included in the Neighborhood Plan. For more information, please contact the BDC offices at 412-681-8800.

Free curbside pickup and disposal of freon containing appliances.

Posted by Terry Ford Aiello on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 9:00 AM

The free freon appliances pickup and disposal program for Allegheny County residents, which started last summer, will be ending soon. You have probably started — or are in the process of starting — your spring cleaning projects, and are probably in need of information about how to recycle unwanted air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, water coolers and dehumidifiers.

You can call the Appliance Warehouse at 1-888-GO-Freon (1-888-463-7366) to schedule your free curbside pickup — but you need to act soon to take advantage of this great program sponsored by the Allegheny County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Resources Council.
