We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers and organizations who made Little Italy Days 2010 a success. There are many people working in the background who made this all possible, so a big THANKS to the following:

  • All of our sponsors, who make the event happen
  • The many volunteers who work tirelessly all year long and during the three days to plan and organize this event
  • Pittsburgh Public Works, especially the 6th division and Mike Nichols for going above and beyond their normal duties to keep the trash under control
  • Commander O’Connor for his presence and extra support
  • Our local businesses who generously donated electricity for paying vendors, including Mark Diulus, Merante Gifts, 7 Cee’s, W.G. Grinders & Bloomfield Drug
  • Jason Sauer and the students from Summit Academy for cleaning the streets on Saturday and Sunday morning
  • Fifth Third Bank for the use of the parking lot for the stage
  • Ellen Levick from The Allure for the use of her sidewalk for the stage crowd
  • Sonny Metallo and his crew for putting up the bocce court and running the largest tournament ever with 14 teams
  • Nelson on Cedarville St. for the use of his land line for the live Radio Italia broadcast
  • Guardian Storage for the use of their mobile storage facilities
  • The entire residential and business community of Bloomfield, who pitched in to help and who graciously put up with some inconveniences so this event could happen
  • The Sunday evening volunteers who cleaned up, gathered up all tables, chairs and trash, returned bleachers and had Liberty Avenue ready for business by Monday morning

Columbus Day Parade 2010

Posted by on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 11:00 AM

Pittsburgh’s Columbus Day Parade Committee will celebrate its 25th Annual Columbus Day Parade on Saturday, October 9, 2010. The parade, starting at 11 a.m., will follow Liberty Avenue from Baum Boulevard to the Bloomfield Bridge.

This year’s grand marshal is Al Vento, founder and owner of Vento’s Pizza. Mr. Vento is a long-time East Liberty businessman who is very active within the Italian-American Community, and is one of the founding members of “Franco’s Italian Army.”

“It’s an opportunity for the Italian-American organizations in Western Pennsylvania to celebrate their proud traditions and heritage” said Guy Costa, the parade chairman. Mr. Costa said he anticipates several thousand participants, including high school bands, speciality bands, ethnic dance groups and organizations with colorful floats. This year’s parade features an authentic gondola and is sponsored by the Italian Sons & Daughters of America.

The parade will close Liberty Avenue from Baum Boulevard to the Bloomfield Bridge, and some side streets, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Access to Western Pennsylvania Hospital for emergency vehicles will be preserved.
