Walk at the Waterfront

Posted by Maggie Ondrey on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 10:06 AM

The Cancer Caring Center located here in Bloomfield is looking for your support, and all you have to do to help is walk. On Sunday, September 13, 2009 the center is holding Walk at the Waterfront, a fundraising pledge walk that begins at 11. The walk is only half an hour and goes along the walking path around the Waterfront.

By participating and raising money for the group, you will also be competing for various prizes. Some of the prizes that you can win are an event shirt, a Steelers’ souvenir ball, and gift cards to the Steelers Sideline Store. The top ten fundraisers will also win a lunch with Ryan Clark, #25 of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his wife at LeMont. Along with these prizes, anyone who donates or gets sponsored for a minimum of $25 will receive a wristband which will give them breakfast, lunch, a goodie bag that includes a program from Superbowl XLIII, and discounts at Waterfront shops. This minimum will also enter you into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Gordon’s Shoes.

If you don’t feel like walking, there are many other ways you can help out.  One way is to “Walk in Spirit”. By “Walking in Spirit”, you can do the same amount of fundraising as those who are walking in the event, and still be eligible for the prizes. To do this, all you would have to do would be collect pledges and send them in by October 10.  It’s the perfect solution for those who aren’t able to make it to the actual walk on September 13.

Another way you can help out would be just going out to dinner. On Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, you can go to Uno Chicago Grill at the Waterfront, and get up to 20% of your check donated to the center. If you go to the Cancer Caring Center website, you can print off a coupon that you can show your server, or just tell the server that you are part of the Cancer Caring Center to participate in this fundraiser.

Any way that you are able to participate is a great way to help out this center that does so much for people. The Cancer Caring Center opened in 1988 in Bloomfield, and is devoted to giving free help to cancer survivors and their families to help them deal with the issues that cancer causes. From support groups that help breast cancer survivors cope to groups that help children understand what’s happening in their families, the Cancer Caring Center is always here to lend a helping hand.

Being a part of any of these fundraising events benefits this non-profit group and helps support their many programs.  For more information on the walk and how to register, visit the Center’s special events page.
