Whether people are looking for an easy way to get into shape or just a way to save money, walking has taken on a new importance in daily life. Having the ability to walk from your home to everything you want or need has become a big priority that homeowners are looking for in today’s housing market. This is especially true here in Pittsburgh, where parking can be tight and often difficult to find. Through the use of a website called Walk Score, people are now able to assess how walkable a neighborhood is.
Through an algorithm created by Matt Lerner, chief technology officer at Front Seat, Walk Score gives neighborhoods a walkability score from 1 to 100. Some data that the algorithm uses are population density, income distribution, whether or not the neighborhood has a distinct center, how close parks, schools, and workplaces are, and how close the buildings are to the street. Bloomfield scores high in each of these areas, and gets anywhere from 94 to 97 in walkability.
Why the discrepancy in scores? It all depends on the address that you search for. If you search for “Bloomfield, Pittsburgh, PA”, the algorithm gives you a high score of 97, which is equal to the scores that Downtown (97) and Southside (98) get. But if you base the search from Bloomfield Bridge Tavern like the recent Pittsburgh Tribune Review article “Web site rates neighborhoods according to ‘walkability’“, you will only get a score of 94, which is similar to the score Squirrel Hill received.
Anyway you do it, Bloomfield still receives a score above 90, which makes it a “Walkers’ Paradise”. And it’s easy to see why, with the variety of businesses located on Liberty Avenue alone. With its wide sidewalks and easily seen shops, Liberty Ave is easy to navigate and shop in. If you need to run virtually any errand, from going to the dentist to renting a movie, everything is easily walked to and found. You can pick up groceries at Donatelli’s Italian Food Center, stop at Bloomfield Drug Store for a few supplies, and get dinner at Wai Wai Chinese Cuisine all without crossing the street. Bloomfield also offers a large amount of bars, like Bloomfield Bridge Tavern and Pleasure Bar, which make the need for a taxi obsolete.
Along with the wide variety of restaurants and shops, Bloomfield also provides easy access to two hospitals, West Penn Hospital and Children’s Hospital. With everything that Bloomfield has to offer its residents, it’s easy to see why Bloomfield is a “Walkers’ Paradise”.
